Mdewakanton Public Safety

As a sovereign nation, the SMSC maintains a full-time, professional fire and ambulance department—Mdewakanton Public Safety (MPS). MPS not only serves the SMSC Members, staff, and guests, but often works in coordination with neighboring governments, including the cities of Shakopee and Prior Lake.

MPS is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and responds to an average of 2,000 calls each year. Through mutual aid agreements with local governments, MPS provides fire and emergency service assistance, responding to 200 mutual aid calls in neighboring cities annually. Learn more at mdfire.org.

Protecting Lives

Mdewakanton Public Safety provides emergency response, emergency medical services, fire prevention, and fire response services. The firefighters control and extinguish fires, handle hazardous materials incidents, conduct rescues, and respond to vehicular accidents—but their work doesn't end with on-the-ground operations. Education is just as important to saving lives as responding to life-threatening situations, and because of that, MPS offers CPR and first aid classes to the general public.
